A Notary is an officer of the law who holds an internationally recognised public office. As a result of this, the signature and seal of the Notary is recognised as evidence of a responsible legal officer in most countries.
The primary work of a Notary is to prepare documents, formally witness the execution of and authenticate documents, and to administer oaths and declarations.
Although when signing the deed or document, the Notary certifies the authenticity of the facts set out in that document, it is often the case that further authentication is required from the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (for an Apostille) or the appropriate Consulate.

Whatever the reason for the Notary services, it is always recommended that you:
- Contact a Notary as soon as possible
- Be ready to provide the Notary with, where possible, the original document needed to be notarised and any related documents
- Provide the Notary with your passport and a utility bill confirming both the identity and residential address of all people signing the document. Without this, the Notary will be unable to proceed
- Be aware that The Notary will need to be satisfied that you understand any document, especially any that are not in English.
