Dealing with the Media

Withy King has extensive experience of dealing with cases of national importance and interest. For example, in 2003/04 we were involved in the litigation concerning the use of frozen embryos subsequent to a relationship breakdown. The case was reported on the national news, as well as in law journals. As a result, we know it is important to give information to the press, but we also understand that it may be important to limit information by way of carefully worded press statements.

The media can be a useful tool if publicity about a case is desired. For example, it can help others to avoid similar problems. Nonetheless, it is important that you control the media, and their coverage, not the other way around, and you must avoid giving an impression about your case which is later hard to change. Indeed, when a claim is ongoing, publicity can be damaging or even contrary to the rules governing litigation.

Should you be approached to discuss a case, or wish to speak publicly about it, we strongly advise that you talk to us first. We and PR professionals have good links to legal and other publications, and our experienced lawyers can guide you through the media maze.
