Woodland Grant Scheme

Woodland and forestry

‘From the Woodland Grant Scheme to tree preservation order guidance, we’re here to help’

Managing woodland successfully

If there’s woodland on your farm, you’ll want to make sure you manage the land successfully, meeting your conservation responsibilities. The woodland will add value to your farm or estate should you ever come to sell it. We can help you protect that value for the long term.

Complying with the regulations

Ever-changing schemes and regulations can make it difficult to manage woodland. The value of your land and timber may be worth more if it’s used for sports and amenities. But if the general public has rights to the land, you may not be able to realise its full value. We can help you find out just where you stand before you buy or sell.

  • The Woodland Grant Scheme
You may have opted for one of the many woodland schemes, like the Woodland Grant Scheme. If you haven’t met the DEFRA conditions during the agreed term, your planting and maintenance grants may be at risk. We can help you protect your position, and make sure that the buyer is responsible for negotiating a new agreement with DEFRA.
  • Understanding planning consents
Planning consents for woodland can be complex. For instance, you don’t normally need planning permission to grow trees. However, you may need consent for major works associated with large-scale forestry, like felling, ground levelling or road construction. We understand the complexities and can guide you through the maze of regulations to help you achieve your plans.
  • Tree Preservation Orders (TPO)
Your plans may have come to a halt because of a Tree Preservation Order on a single tree or clump of trees. Or perhaps you need to carry out an environmental impact assessment if your planting is over prescribed areas. We can give you specialist advice to overcome the hurdles and protect the value of your woodland, now and in the future.
