Simon Bassett
Partner
Simon has specialised in family law for over 16 years and has gained a deep understanding of what is often the most stressful experience you can face; the breakdown of a relationship.
“A good family lawyer needs to be more than simply a lawyer. When a relationship breaks down, the solution is never a formula straight from the text book. It is about listening and understanding clients, thinking outside the box and finding a fair and amicable way forward. It’s about looking for fair treatment as well as a pragmatic solution. Giving my clients well-rounded advice is important to me, so I’ve built up a network of experts including accountants and actuaries who I work with to give clients the best advice which is most relevant to them.“
As head of the family law team in Oxfordshire Simon is well-known in the Oxford business community.
The Legal 500 UK 2012, an independent guide to the legal profession, recognises that Simon 'has "invaluable experience and knowledge of the legal system." '
Simon’s expertise includes:
- providing advice on all aspects of separation and divorce
- advising on financial matters and complex settlements, often involving companies
- pensions
- matters involving children, including DNA testing
- cohabitation and pre-nuptial agreements.
Simon is a regular contributor to local and legal press and provides family law training for local charities and organisations, including RELATE and the Citizens’ Advice Bureau. He regularly features on BBC Radio Oxford dealing with family law matters. He is an accredited advisor for Resolution, an organisation committed to the constructive resolution of family disputes.
Simon qualified as a solicitor in 1995 and joined Withy King as a partner in 2008 after the firm’s merger with the Oxfordshire firm Marshall & Galpin. Simon divides his time between the Oxford and Abingdon offices.
